Dr. Whitney Mascaro is a compassionate and dedicated psychologist with a strong commitment to serving clients from diverse backgrounds. With expertise in a variety of therapeutic approaches, she primarily works from emotion-focused and attachment-based orientations. Depending on each person’s unique needs, she incorporates CBT, ACT, DBT, and IFS interventions. Dr. Mascaro specializes in working with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, self-harm, chronic suicidality, trauma, survivors of violence, complex PTSD, relationship concerns, and sexual identity/LGBTQIA+ concerns.
Dr. Mascaro is multiculturally aware and trauma-informed, ensuring that her clients feel safe and supported throughout their therapeutic journey. She is deeply committed to developing and growing her multicultural competence and is a strong advocate for social justice. With a values-based approach, Dr. Mascaro strives to help her clients live fulfilling lives that align with their core beliefs and values.
education & experience
Dr. Mascaro attended the University of Virginia for her M.Ed. in Counselor Education before attending West Virginia University for her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. While at UVA, Dr. Mascaro trained as a school counselor in K-12 public school settings and conducted research with the Youth Violence Project Lab centered on bullying and violence prevention.
While at WVU, she provided individual counseling and group therapy at the Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services. She worked for Cardinal Pediatrics in Morgantown conducting cognitive and psychological evaluations, providing individual and family therapy, and parent coaching. She then went on to complete a practicum rotation with the University of Richmond Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
Dr. Mascaro completed internship at the College of William & Mary Counseling Center working with young adult college students. She provided couples counseling and co-facilitated several therapy groups, such as a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills-based group and a Women’s Understanding Self & Others process group. She also developed a passion for training and supervision.
Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Dr. Mascaro lives with her spouse, labradoodle, and tuxedo cat. She enjoys practicing yoga and watching sports.
